Egypt in Summer
Summer in Egypt is a trade. Inland it is hot - there is no point pretending otherwise - but the Red Sea is superb, the ancient sites are empty, and prices are the lowest of the year.
At a glance
- Months
- May to September

- Best for
- Red Sea, diving, value, quiet temples
Whether summer is right for you depends almost entirely on the shape of the trip. Beach-first, it is the best time of year. Temple-first, it is the hardest, and we would rather say that than sell you a difficult week.
The practical answer for most summer travellers is a split: most of the trip on the coast, and a short Cairo leg with dawn starts for the pyramids and the museum.
If you do want the full ancient-Egypt itinerary in summer, it works - with early mornings, air conditioning throughout, and afternoons deliberately left empty. You will have the temples largely to yourself.
Red Sea & Diving Trips
The summer case for Egypt, in one section. Warm water, strong visibility, and shade whenever you want it.

Summer-Friendly Packages
Itineraries built for the heat: dawn starts, air-conditioned transport, and afternoons deliberately left empty.

Sharm & Sinai Excursions
Sinai and the southern reefs, which are the strongest reason to come to Egypt between May and September.

What summer is actually like
- The warmest sea temperatures and best diving visibility of the year.
- Ancient sites at their quietest.
- The lowest inland pricing - the same cruise costs far less than in winter.
- Upper Egypt regularly exceeds forty degrees. Midday is not sightseeing time.
- The coast is at peak season, so resorts are busier and dearer than inland.
What to pack for summer
- Lightweight long sleeves for sun cover.
- Serious sun protection, reapplied through the day.
- Swimwear and snorkel kit.
- Electrolytes and a refillable bottle.
- A wide-brim hat rather than a cap.
Frequently asked
Is summer a bad time to visit Egypt?
It depends entirely on what you want. For a beach-and-diving trip it is the best time. For a full Cairo-Luxor-Aswan itinerary it is the hardest, though very doable with dawn starts - and by far the cheapest.
How do you plan around the heat?
Sightseeing starts at opening time, vehicles and cabins are air-conditioned, and the middle of the day is left free. You see the same things, in a different order.
Which months exactly?
May through September, with July and August the most extreme. Each month has its own page with the detail.
Is it cheaper enough to be worth it?
Inland, substantially - often a third less than the winter peak for the same boat or hotel.
