March is, for many travellers, the sweet spot. The winter crowds are thinning, the days are reliably warm without being punishing, and the Nile is at its most pleasant.

Best for
Cruises, value, comfortable sightseeing

You get February's weather with fewer people and softer prices, especially in the second half of the month. For a first trip covering Cairo, Luxor and Aswan, it is one of the two or three months we recommend without hesitation.

The one local quirk is the Khamaseen, a hot dusty wind that can blow for a day or two in spring. It is occasional rather than constant, and it usually means a hazy sky rather than a lost day.

Cruise availability is good and the boats are not yet running at winter prices, so this is a strong month to upgrade the standard of boat rather than the length of the trip.

What March is actually like

  • Winter weather with spring prices, particularly after mid-month.
  • Deck temperatures are comfortable all day, which stops being true from May.
  • Boats are easier to book than in January or February.
  • The Khamaseen wind can raise dust for a day or two.
  • Luxor's west bank is at its best before the summer heat arrives.

What to pack for March

  • Light layers and a thin jacket for evenings.
  • Sunglasses and a scarf for the occasional dusty wind.
  • Swimwear - Red Sea water is warming up.
  • A refillable bottle; you will drink more than you expect.
  • Comfortable shoes for long temple days.
