First Trip to Egypt
If this is your first time, the honest advice is to see fewer things properly rather than more things briefly. Egypt punishes a rushed itinerary.
At a glance
- Suggested length
- 8-10 days
- Classic route
- Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, ideally by cruise
- Best months
- October, November, March
- Pace
- Two major sites a day, no more
- Guide
- An Egyptologist guide changes the trip completely
- Tipping
- Normal and expected - carry small notes
- Biggest mistake
- Too many places in too few days
The classic first trip is Cairo and the Giza plateau, then Luxor and Aswan, ideally linked by a Nile cruise. Eight to ten days covers it without a route march. Anything under six days and you will spend the trip in transit.
The most common first-timer mistake is underestimating distance and heat at the same time - booking three sites in a day in June, then abandoning two of them. The second is booking the cheapest cruise available and discovering what that meant.
October, November and March are the months we point first-timers to. The weather does the work for you, and you are not fighting January's crowds or July's heat.

Cruises for a First Visit
A cruise solves the Luxor-to-Aswan leg and is the part of a first trip people remember most.

The Essential Cairo Day Tours
The non-negotiables: the pyramids, the Sphinx, Saqqara and the museum. Take these slowly.

What first-timers should know
- Eight to ten days is the right length. Under six and you are mostly travelling.
- A Nile cruise solves the Luxor-to-Aswan leg and is the best part for most people.
- Two major sites a day is a full day. Three is a bad day.
- A proper Egyptologist guide is the difference between stones and a story.
- Tipping is normal here and expected. Carry small notes.
What to bring on a first trip
- Comfortable closed shoes - you will walk on uneven, dusty ground.
- Sun protection regardless of month.
- Modest clothing for mosques and churches: covered shoulders and knees.
- Small US dollar notes for tips.
- A torch for tomb interiors.
Frequently asked
How many days do I need in Egypt?
Eight to ten for a first visit covering Cairo, Luxor and Aswan. Six is possible but tight. Under six and you will spend most of the trip moving between places.
Should my first trip include a Nile cruise?
For most people, yes. It solves the Luxor-to-Aswan leg, unpacks you once, and it is the part of the trip people remember.
Is Egypt easy to travel in for a first-timer?
With a guide and pre-arranged transfers, yes. Independently it is harder than most first-time visitors expect, mainly because of distance, heat and site logistics.
What is the best month for a first visit?
October, November or March. Comfortable temperatures, full cruise schedules, and not the January crowd crush.
