Daytime highs sit in the high teens in Cairo and low twenties in Luxor and Aswan, which is as comfortable as Egypt gets for walking around temples all day. Mornings are genuinely cold, and so are Nile cruise decks once the sun goes down.
The catch is company. January is when the northern hemisphere escapes its own winter, so the Valley of the Kings and the Giza plateau are at their fullest. Early starts stop being a nice idea and become the difference between a good day and a queue.
Prices follow the crowds. If your dates are fixed to January, book several months out; if they are flexible, March and November give you almost the same weather for less.
Nile Cruises Sailing in January
January is when the smarter boats justify their price: you spend the cold early mornings inside and the warm afternoons on deck.

Luxor & Upper Egypt Day Tours
Luxor in January is as good as temple weather gets. Start at the Valley of the Kings before the coaches and the day is yours.

What January is actually like
- The most comfortable walking weather of the year, and the clearest desert skies.
- Coptic Christmas on 7 January is a genuinely local occasion, not a tourist event.
- Every cruise runs, so there is real choice of boat.
- It is the busiest month: expect company at every major site.
- Nights are cold. Aswan before sunrise in January surprises people.
What to pack for January
- Real layers - mornings near the Nile are cold, afternoons are warm.
- A proper jacket for cruise decks after sunset and for desert nights.
- Sun protection anyway: the winter sun in Upper Egypt is strong.
- Comfortable closed shoes for uneven, dusty temple ground.
- A scarf, useful for wind, dust, and visiting mosques.
Frequently asked
Is January a good time to visit Egypt?
For weather, it is the best month of the year. For crowds and price, it is the worst. If your dates are flexible, November or March give you nearly the same conditions for less money and fewer people.
How cold does it get on a Nile cruise in January?
Days on deck are pleasant. Once the sun drops, and especially while the boat is moving, it gets cold quickly - bring a real jacket rather than a light layer.
Are the sites crowded in January?
Yes. Early-morning starts matter more this month than any other. We build January itineraries to reach the Valley of the Kings and Abu Simbel before the coach groups arrive.
Does it rain in Egypt in January?
Barely. Cairo might see a shower or two across the whole month; Luxor and Aswan see effectively none.
