Egypt is a warm, sunny destination with a mix of ancient sites, desert, river and sea — so packing well makes a real difference to your comfort. Here is a practical list of what to bring, whatever the season.

Clothing: light, loose and modest

Lightweight, breathable clothes in natural fabrics are ideal for the heat. Loose long sleeves and trousers protect you from the sun and are respectful at religious sites, where covering shoulders and knees is expected. Pack a scarf or shawl — useful for women visiting mosques and for shade anywhere. Evenings on a Nile cruise or in the desert can be cool, so bring a light jacket or sweater.

Sun protection is essential

The Egyptian sun is strong for most of the year. Bring a wide-brimmed hat, good sunglasses, and high-factor sunscreen, and reapply often — especially on a cruise deck or at open sites like the pyramids, where there is little shade.

Footwear

Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes are a must for the uneven ground at temples and tombs. Sandals are handy for the boat and the beach, and slip-on shoes make temple visits easier.

Practical extras

Pack a reusable water bottle, hand sanitizer and any personal medication. A universal adapter, a power bank, and a small daypack for excursions are all useful. Bring some cash in small notes for tips and local purchases, and a copy of your travel documents.

If you are visiting the Red Sea

For the coast, add swimwear, a rash guard for snorkeling, and reef-safe sunscreen to help protect the coral. For more tips, see our Egypt travel blog or explore our Egypt tours and Nile cruises.
