A private tour is worth the difference if you want to control the pace, travel with your own party, or visit the big sites outside the crowd. A group tour is the better choice if the saving matters more than the schedule, or if you would rather travel with other people than alone. The real difference is not luxury. It is who decides what time you leave the hotel.
What actually changes
| Private | Group | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets the pace | You | The itinerary |
| Start times | Moveable — early at the Pyramids, late after a long flight | Fixed |
| Time at each site | As long as you want | Whatever the group allows |
| Your guide | Yours alone, answering your questions | Shared with the group |
| Vehicle | Private car with driver | Coach |
| Cost per person | Higher, and falls sharply as your party grows | Lower, fixed |
| Company | Just your party | Other travellers |
The cost gap closes faster than people expect
Private touring is priced per vehicle and per guide, not per seat. A solo traveller pays the whole of it; two people split it; four people split it again. By the time you are a family of four the difference against four group seats is much smaller than the headline suggests, and you have the car and the guide to yourselves. This is why private travel is the default for families and why solo travellers most often join groups.
Our own private packages start from $799 and run to $4,999 depending on length and hotel standard — see the full range under private Egypt tours.
When the pace really matters
Two situations turn the pace from a preference into the whole trip. The first is the Giza plateau, where being there when it opens is a different experience from arriving mid-morning with everyone else. The second is a long-haul arrival: on a group schedule your first morning is fixed whether you slept or not.
The reverse case is real too. Solo travellers often find a group is the point rather than the compromise — you eat with people, you have company at dinner, and the cost is predictable.
Frequently asked questions
Is a private tour much more expensive?
Per person, it depends almost entirely on your party size. For one it is considerably more; for four it is often close. Ask for both prices for your actual group before deciding.
Does private mean luxury?
No. Private describes who you travel with, not the hotel standard. A private trip can use three-star hotels, and a group tour can use five-star ones.
Can I change the plan mid-trip on a private tour?
Usually yes, within reason — swapping an afternoon, adding a site, starting earlier. That flexibility is most of what you are paying for.
Which is better for a first visit?
Either works. If your first visit is short, private buys you more of it. Our guided vs independent guide covers the step before this one.
Prices are our own from-prices, reviewed September 2026. Tell us your party size on the plan your trip page and we will quote both.
