An entire ancient city whose plan survives because nothing replaced it, with tomb reliefs in the unmistakable Amarna style.
Akhenaten founded the city around 1346 BC and it was abandoned soon after his death, when the traditional cults were restored and the court returned north. Excavation has recovered its street plan, palaces and workshops; the bust of Nefertiti was found in a sculptor's studio here in 1912.
October to April. The site is large and exposed, so an early start helps.
On the east bank near Minya in Middle Egypt, about 300 km south of Cairo. Best visited by private car with a guide, often with Beni Hasan.
